Why are curves so appealing?
As we have collectively spent the last couple of years at home, you might be looking around and wondering how you can upgrade or make your space more inviting not only to you but also to those guests you plan on hosting soon.
May we suggest being less of a square and embracing curved furniture? We know it sounds wild, but the logic is backed by science. That’s right, science.
According to BBC Science Focus Magazine, many studies have proven why the circle or curved line is exceptionally appealing to us humans. A 2011 study shows that as early as 5 months old, our eyes seek out a curved line vs. a straight one.
So if you are feeling like your home is not offering up that peaceful, safe and dreamy vibe, here are some design ideas to help you embrace them curves:
Mirrors
Mirrors are the most effortless ways to add dimension to one’s space. They act as a picture on a wall and reflect light in your space, making it feel more bright and airy. The arched or round mirror, instead of a rectangle or square, takes those elements to another level.
Interior designer Timothy Brown says, “Arched mirrors are a simple way to add a bit of drama to a room. The arch creates the illusion of a higher ceiling, and of course, a mirror always opens up a room.”
The bonus? No matter your design esthetic, this mirror can fit in with any style, from boho to classic to rustic.
Furniture
Whether you gravitate towards a curved sofa or chair, the key is to choose a piece that makes a statement.
Designer Linda Haslett told the blog Food52 that “Pieces with curves are all about being seen and not tucked away. They make a statement as soon as you see them in a room and are best seen in muted colors or soft jewel tones.” She suggests balancing curved pieces with a modern vibe, such as matte black metal light fixtures, a shapely lamp, or even a unique pair of bookends.
Accents
Curved furniture gives a retro vibe (think the 70s and 80s) that you may not want to commit to with the bigger ticket items. Consider focusing on smaller pieces like a large round coffee table or 1970’s inspired side tables or a funky curved lamp that can stand the test of time and act as conversation pieces.
Don’t forget to play
Get adventurous with this trend! Play with colors such as jewel tones, mossy green, sienna, rust, or even cobalt. Throw the rule book out the window and blend eras, style, and fabric to make a multi-dimensional room.
